Taking Liberties was nominated for Best Use of Technology in the 2009 Museums and Heritage Awards for Excellence, and won the Premiere Award in the 2009 Learning On-Screen Awards.
Using barcoded wristbands, visitors express their opinions on a wide variety of contemporary issues. We created fourteen voting stations throughout the exhibition, each including a main content screen, a barcode scanner, a rotary navigation dial and a small but vibrant text display screen. As visitors cast their votes, the cumulative results are projected as an elegant “data wheel”. Web users could affect the results shown in the gallery as they voted via a two-way real time link with the exhibition's website.
Delta developed and delivered the entire package. We carried out usability testing for the barcode system, designed the on-screen content, developed the database software, installed the network, produced the custom rotary dials (both electronic and 3D elements) and were able to test the final installation with plenty of time to spare.
